Introduction

The OSI Model

• The Open System Interconnection Model
• Standardization model which we use to demonstrate the theory behind the networking.
• In practical it’s actually the TCP/IP model that the real world is based on. However it is easier to understand with OSI.
• It consists of 7 layers.

Layer 7 - Application

• Provide networking options to programs
• It almost exclusively works with applications, providing an interface for them to transmit the data.

Layer 6 - Presentation

• Receives data from the application layer.
• Presentation layer translates the data into a standardization format, as well as handling any encryption, compression or other transformations to the data.

Layer 5 - Session

• Looks to see if it can setup a connection with other computers across the network.
